DWL-5000AP Firmware Upgrade For the full FAQ on upgrading the firmware on the DWL-5000AP go to http://www.support.dlink.com/faq/view.asp?prod_id=1099 You can only upgrade the firmware from a computer using Windows 2000 or Windows XP. Do NOT upgrade firmware on any D-Link product over a wireless connection. Failure of the device may result. Use only hard-wired network connections. *********************************************************************************** Please follow these instructions to upgrade the firmware. *********************************************************************************** Donwload the firmware 1. Download the firmware for your DWL-5000AP. You can download the firmware at ftp://ftp.dlink.com/Wireless/dwl5000AP/Firmware/dwl5000AP_firmware_14.zip 2. Save the file to your desktop. Verify connectivity to the DWL-5000AP 1. You must be on the same subnet as the DWL-5000AP. The default IP address of the DWL-5000AP is 192.168.0.50. If your IP address is not 192.168.0.X you will need to set a static IP address of 192.168.0.X. 2. Open your Internet browser and type in the IP address of your DWL-5000AP. The default IP address of the DWL-5000AP is 192.168.0.50. Log into the DWL-5000AP. The default login is Username: Admin with no password. 3. Close your Internet browser. Setup an FTP Server 1. Using Windows 2000 or Windows XP, create an FTP server. Make sure you have Internet Information Services (IIS) installed. You can install IIS from Start>Settings>Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs. Click on Add/Remove Windows Components and select Internet Information Services (IIS). Windows may prompt you for the Original installation CD. Insert the Windows 2000 installation CD at this time. Reboot if prompted to. 2. Once you have IIS installed you will need to create a user account on the PC. To do this go to Start>Settings>Control Panel>Administrative Tools>Computer Management. Now double click on Local Users and Groups then click on Users. 3. Click on the Action menu at the top of the windows and select New User. 4.In the User Name field type in dlink. In the Password and Confirm Password field type in dlink. Uncheck "User must change password at next logon" and check "Password never expires". Click Create then click Close to close this window. You now have a User Account with the Username of dlink and a password of dlink. 5. Double-click on the file that you downloaded from our support site. The contents of the .ZIP file will be displayed. You will need to select the destination of the zipped files. For this procedure extract the files to C:\Inetpub\ftproot. Make sure you select All Files under the heading Files on the left side. Also select Use Folder Names. When you have selected the destination location, click Extract. 6. Verify you can login to the ftp server. Go to Start>Run and type in cmd. Once you are the command prompt type in ipconfig to display your current IP information. Now ftp to your IP address. (Ex.ftp 192.168.0.10). When prompted for the User type in dlink. You should now be prompted to input a password, type in dlink. Once you are logged in you should see: user dlink logged in ftp> 7. At ftp> type in ls to display a list of the contents on the root of you ftp server. You should see ap11.img and ap11.sys. Login to the DWL-5000AP 1. Open your Internet browser and type in the IP address of the DWL-5000AP. The default IP address is 192.168.0.50. 2. Once you are logged in minimize but leave the Internet browser open with the DWL-5000AP’s configuration page. DO NOT CLOSE YOUR INTERNET BROWSER OR REBOOT THE DWL-5000AP FROM THIS POINT ON UNTIL YOU ARE PROMPTED TO ! Hyperterminal into the DWL-5000AP 1. Connect the RS-232 cable to the console port on the back of the DWL-5000AP then connect the other end to COM1 on your PC. Go to Start->Programs->Accessories->Communications->Hyperterminal. 2. Name the New connection DWL-5000AP then click OK. 3. Select the COM port you are connected to then click OK. 4. Change the Bits per second to 9600 and leave all other settings at the default values. Click OK. 5. The hyperterminal window should now appear blank. At this point unplug the DWL-5000AP and immediately plug it back in. The DWL-5000AP will go through POST. 6. When POST is complete you will see Ready. Press the Enter key. 7. You will now be prompted to enter the user name and password to login to the DWL-5000AP. At login, enter Admin then press Enter. Leave password blank then press Enter. 8. Type in ls then press Enter to display the current firmware files. 9. Type admin then press Enter. You will be prompted for a password. Type in dlink then press Enter. 10. Type format then press Enter. Type ls then press Enter. The DWL-5000AP will be null. Upgrade the firmware 1. Maximize your Internet browser to bring up the web base configuration of the DWL-5000AP. 2. Click on the Configuration tab then click on Firmware Update. 3. Click on Advanced to configure your ftp settings. Enter the IP address of your ftp server (ex. 192.168.0.10) in the Host Name field. Enter user name and password to log into your ftp server (ex. user name dlink, password dlink) in the User Name and Password fields. Leave the Image Path blank. Enter the firmware file name (ex. ap11.img) in Image field. 4. Click on Update. The DWL-5000AP should now begin upgrading. DO NOT INTERRUPT THE UPGRADE PROCESS! 5. When you see Upgrade Successful click on the Reboot AP button. 6. Minimize your Internet browser. The Hyperterminal window will now show the DWL-5000AP going through POST. Once POST is complete the upgrade process is finished. Disconnect your Hyperterminal Session 1. In the Hyperterminal window click on Call the select disconnect. You may now close the Hyperterminal Window.
